GI PLANT SHIRWAL: BECOMING ENERGY SMART

While cities look to go smart, Godrej Interio too has been making serious investments in data compilation and analytics to improve its energy consumption record at various plants. This article is a case study of the implementation of Cloud based monitoring system at the the company’s Shirwal Plant: it states the challenge faced, the technology intervention and the benefits accrued.

Challenge
At GI Plant Shirwal, due to complex processes and a large product portfolio, manual tracking of energy usage pattern and its comparison with production was difficult. Since commissioning a few years ago, the Plant used energy efficient machines and equipment.

Intervention
Plant Shirwal implemented Cloud based monitoring system to capture and monitor all its energy meter readings and energy consumption. This system sends the data via GPRS to the Cloud, eliminating manual monitoring of meter-readings and use of Excel for record keeping. Instantaneous load on the system and node wise consumption can be tracked in real-time. If a node consumes more power than required, an email is sent to the responsible person. The system monitors the various sources of conventional and renewable energy.

Benefits
With access to real-time information on energy consumption, administrators feel secure that they are making better, more energy conscious decisions. It helps them understand the characteristics of their energy consumption, identify opportunities with the biggest ROI, keep energy efficiency projects on track, and verify results. With extensive efforts to conserve energy, specific energy consumption of Plant Shirwal has reduced by 43% over last three years.
